Act Now for a Peaceful World
Join us to mark the International Day of Peace, guided by this year’s United Nations theme: "Act Now for a Peaceful World."
As we move past the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, we call for the elimination of nuclear weapons as a vital step toward global peace. Japanese, Korean and Taiwanese students will lead a hands-on activity in folding paper cranes—a powerful symbol of peace.
A Peace Ginkgo tree-planting ceremony will follow, symbolizing resilience and hope for future generations. This tree was grown from a seed from one of the first trees to resprout at Ground Zero in Hiroshima. Thank you to Tom Schneider of the Rotary Club for taking care of it for several years and giving it to us.
The event includes a screening of the documentary The Beginning of the End of Nuclear Weapons, which explores the global movement to abolish nuclear arms.
We will close with a post-film discussion and letter-writing session. Letter templates, envelopes, addresses and stamps will be on hand to make it easy for all to take action.
All are welcome. Learn, reflect and take meaningful steps toward a more peaceful world.
