Where can I go?
The college is a member of the organization CONAHEC. Through CONAHEC Selkirk College students can participate in semester exchanges to many different countries. For a complete list of those countries visit CONAHEC for more information.
Selkirk College also has study abroad partners in these countries. The opportunities range from a few weeks to a semester or more. Follow the links for more information.
Australia
Complete your degree in Australia at Griffith University. Selkirk College has a block transfer agreement in place which allows you to transfer the courses you took here into an Australian Bachelor's degree. Advanced placement can mean you're done in 1-2 years.
France
The American Business School (ABS) in Paris: ABS is a prestigious university located in central Paris which offers internationally recognized degrees. All courses are taught in English so students do not need to have any prior French language skills before they go. This exchange is only open to Business Administration Students.
Guatemala
Select senior baccalaureate Nursing students have been traveling to Guatemala annually since 2005 as part of their 3rd year practicum and commitment to learn more about the common roots of health care challenges in both the north and the south.

Japan
Study Japanese language and culture through the Global Japan program at the Nagoya University of Foreign Studies (NUFS) in Nagoya Japan.
Two Selkirk College students are selected each year to receive a scholarship that covers most living expenses while in Japan.
The Philippines
Take PEAC 205: Global perspectives in Peace and have the option to travel to Philippines and study at the Mindanao Peace Building Institute. This independent study course allows you to develop your own program and learning objectives and allows you to gain a deeper understanding of building cultures of peace in a cross-cultural setting.
Scotland
Robert Gordon University located in Aberdeen Scotland has opportunities for our students to study on Exchange for a semester and take courses in their Business, Communications or Tourism programs.
South Africa
Take PEAC 205: Global perspectives in Peace and have the option to travel to South Africa and study at the African Peace Building Institute. This independent study course allows you to develop your own program and learning objectives and allows you to gain a deeper understanding of building cultures of peace in a cross-cultural setting.

How can I apply?
Once you have determined where you want to go and what you wish to do on your education abroad experience, apply to Selkirk International's Study Abroad Coordinator or your program's group leader.
- To apply for a semester-long study abroad exchange experience complete the study abroad application form and email it to the study abroad coordinator. Apply as early as possible as available spaces at partner institutions fill up quickly.
- To apply for program specific education abroad experiences contact the group leader or faculty member in charge of the course.
- Once you have been accepted to study abroad you will need to complete other institution specific application forms.
- If you are applying to develop a new study abroad experience you will need to conform to Selkirk College's Education Abroad Policy and complete the required application and forms.
How much will it cost?
The total cost for studying abroad on exchange with one of our partners will vary from person to person and depend on the economic situation of the country you travel to. The costs listed below are approximate.
Typically, your tuition costs will be the same or cheaper than you would pay in a normal semester at Selkirk College. Additional costs you will need to consider include airfare, study permit / visa application fees, accommodation and cost of living fees.

Living costs will depend on the country you are studying in. Typically, costs in Central and South America are less than living costs in Europe or Japan for example.
Study Abroad Awards are available to students interested in studying abroad to help with these costs.
Can I get scholarships?
Several scholarships are awarded annually to Selkirk College students that can help cover the costs of living and studying or working abroad.
Ike Barber One World Scholarships
$1000 - $3500 each.
- These scholarships are given to students who travel internationally and earn credits that are a formal part of their credential program.
- The international experience must be an integral part of your program such as a co-op, field study, or courses that transfer back to your program at Selkirk College.
- The international program must be at least 3 weeks long.

Nagoya University of Foreign Studies Student Exchange Scholarship
60,000 yen per month
- Each year 2 Selkirk College students receive this scholarship to study at our partner, the Nagoya University of Foreign Studies (NUFS) for 1 – 2 semesters.
- This scholarship is a stipend of 60,000 yen per month to help cover living expenses, accommodation and food.
- Additionally, the students pay Selkirk College tuition and do not have to pay any additional tuition in Japan. (Tuition in Japan is approximately $5,500/ semester).
- Students are selected and nominated by Selkirk College for participation in this program

Additional Scholarships at NUFS: Japan Association of Student Services Organization (JASSO) Scholarships
- The JASSO scholarships are awarded on a rotating basis to visiting international students. Selkirk College students are nominated every few years for this award.
- the additional 20,000 yen per month is added on to the 60,000 yen per month of the NUFS Student exchange scholarship to total 80,000 yen per month. Students also receive a small settlement amount of about 80,000 yen when they first arrive.
- Selkirk College receives a nomination form from NUFS every few years, and is able to nominate a student of high academic standing for this additional scholarship.
Premier’s International Scholarship (Ike Barber)
$6,000 - $10,000 each.
Ten to twenty scholarships are awarded throughout the province each year on the basis of merit each year to students wishing to pursue post-secondary education outside of Canada or the USA.
The student must be enrolled in an academic program that leads to a credential (degree or diploma) that requires at least two years of full time study to complete.
Deadlines for applications:
- April 15
To apply, print off the application form, and submit all required documents to Selkirk International's study abroad coordinator before the deadline.
Applicants must meet all the Ike Barber One World Scholarship criteria as well as the following additional criteria:
- The study/work abroad program begins between May of the current year and April of the following year.
- The study/work abroad program is a minimum of one semester in length.
- The student has achieved a B+ or equivalent academic standing.
Selkirk College Study Abroad Awards
Thanks to the generosity of donors, Selkirk College offers two Study Abroad Awards:
Devin Turner Spirit of Adventure - $500
This award is designed to inspire and support international educational adventures for Canadian students from Selkirk College. The award is presented to a Canadian student in any full-time program who is embarking on an international travel component (academic exchange, work practicum, field studies course, continuing education (to receive a degree/diploma, etc).
Val Trembley Study Abroad Award - $470
This award is presented to a Selkirk College student who is participating in an international academic exchange, work term, or study abroad experience. The successful recipient must be enrolled as a Selkirk College student at the time of application. Please note that international is defined as any country outside of Canada.
Students who apply for Ike Barber One World Scholarships will be automatically considered for these awards.

Study Internationally
Students in any program can:
- Study language and culture and earn transferable Selkirk College Credits at one of our partner schools in Japan , Mexico, Argentina, Chile or one of the many other countries we have agreements with.
Students in specific programs can:
- Spend a semester as an exchange student in a different country and earn credits towards their program.
- Business Administration students can apply to study at the American Business School in Paris, France!
- Peace Studies students can apply to have an international experience as a component of PEAC 205
Work Internationally
Students in any program can:
- Work internationally with Co-op Education’s Going Global program.
Students in specific programs can:
- TESOL graduates can apply to complete a practicum at Tiayuan Normal University in China
- Ski Resort Operations and Management students have an opportunity to complete their fourth semester paid work placement at a ski resort in China.
- Nursing students can apply to complete their third year practicum in Guatemala
Complete your Degree Internationally
- Transfer your credits from your Selkirk College diploma and complete a bachelor’s degree in Australia in as little as 3 semesters!
- Resort and Hotel Management and Ski Resort Operations and Management graduates can complete a Master’s degree in Switzerland in as little as 2 years.
