Statement on Violence at University of Waterloo

June 30, 2023
Castlegar Campus in the Summer

The horrible act of violence that took place on June 29 at the University of Waterloo has shaken the post-secondary sector across Canada. Our hearts are with the students, staff and community members who have been impacted by this terrible incident.

Expanding one’s knowledge and gaining skills to enable brighter futures takes courage and commitment. Learners trust that the post-secondary environment is one where thought, exploration, deeper understanding and expression of opinion are achieved in safe surroundings. When that safety is violated, it is natural to question and feel the impact closer to home.

Selkirk College reaffirms our Strategic Plan commitment to providing educational experience built upon respect, dignity and integrity. We place utmost value on diverse people, ideas and perspectives, cultures and traditions, and the modelling of respectful discourse in our work. As a college community, we stand together to condemn all forms of hatred, bigotry and violence.

It is understandable in a time like this to feel anxious and overwhelmed. As we grapple with how and why something like this could happen, we encourage you to always support each other. If needed, connect with mental wellness resources available through the college and in the community.

Dr. Maggie Matear, Selkirk College President
