Instructor, Early Childhood Care and Education and Education Assistant and Community Support Worker
Marla Gonzalez is a passionate instructor with over 20 years of experience in community and school-based support for children youth and families here in the West Kootenay. These experiences, combined with her academic background, guide her teaching in the Early Childhood Care and Education and the Education Assistant and Community Support Worker programs.
Marla holds a dual diploma in Early Childhood Education (ECE) with Infant Toddler (IT) and Special Needs (SN) specializations from Northern Lights College. She went on to complete a Bachelor of Child and Youth Care with an Indigenous specialization at the University of Victoria and a Master of Education in Pedagogy and Curriculum from the University of British Columbia, with a focus on place-based consciousness.
Marla's professional work has included early years developmental education, support, and intervention, complex care, behaviour, and trauma intervention. These roles strengthened her skills in understanding developmental needs, supporting children with diverse abilities and working alongside families navigating challenges.
As an instructor, she draws on these experiences to prepare students for careers in the education and helping professions. Marla's teaching philosophy emphasizes pedagogical practices that support the learner as a whole person. She views education as a pursuit of passion, where meaningful learning emerges from curiosity, engagement, and connection.
Marla credits her father as an important inspiration in her academic journey and her passion for teaching. Marla is committed to lifelong learning and believes in education as a tool for growth, resilience and opportunity.
