The bond of belief in post-secondary education to achieve remarkable outcomes was on display at the Selkirk College Bursary Tea on Nelson’s Tenth Street Campus in early-February.
An annual tradition, the 2024 Bursary Tea brought together 230 donors and students to celebrate the connections that build community. A wholesome afternoon with delicious treats prepared and served by students in the School of Hospitality & Tourism programs, the Mary Hall banquet room was filled with joyous energy.
“Everyone in this room is here to support learners, teachers, families, and community,” said Payton Maffioli, a student in the Recreation, Fish & Wildlife Program who spoke on behalf of her peers in all programs. “Without you, we wouldn’t be able to pursue our dreams. And it’s because of your dream to continue supporting youth and alumni that we can thrive and one day become members of a community, and we too will carry this legacy for our future students at Selkirk College.”
Based on financial need, bursaries are open to learners in all programs. Unlike scholarships, the main criteria for receiving a bursary is not academic standing. This year, Selkirk College will provide 334 bursaries from generous individuals and organizations that value $219,000. A total of 223 students will receive at least one bursary this year to help them offset the costs of their post-secondary education.
Retired recreation therapist Janice Murphy spoke on behalf of donors. As a member of the Canadian Federation of University Women Nelson & District Club that provides two bursaries for Selkirk College students, Murphy stressed the importance of regional post-secondary opportunities. With a Doctorate Degree in Education Studies and a lifetime learner herself, she told those gathered that finances should not be a barrier to pursuing educational dreams.
“Our club recognizes the financial challenges students face and the stories shared by the women we have supported over the years inspire us to continue fundraising for, and donating to our Selkirk College bursaries,” Murphy said.
The next round of applications for bursaries will take place between September 15 and October 31. Applications for Selkirk College scholarships are accepted between February 15 and March 31. Students can learn more about what is available at Financial Aid & Awards.
