Understanding Your Application
Admission requirement: This item must be satisfactorily completed to be admitted to the program. You will not be able to hold a seat in the program until the requirement is met.
Pre-practicum requirement: This item must be completed prior to your first practice placement. If the requirement is unmet by the deadline, you will not be able to participate, and your academic progress will be negatively impacted.
Pre-program requirement: This item must be completed before the program begins, but you may receive conditional admission and hold a seat in the program in the meantime.
Health and Human Services application package form
Admission requirement: All Health and Human Services programs
This form will collect your personal information, assess your computer skills and ask for any additional information required for your specific program. Please ensure your responses are complete and correct. Submit this prior to your remaining documentation.
Casper assessment
Admission requirement: Bachelor of Science in Nursing
Casper is an open-response situational judgment test that measures aspects of your social intelligence and professionalism, like ethics, empathy, problem-solving and collaboration. You must book a test date that is prior to Feb. 15th of the same year you will start the program. Be sure to select Selkirk College as the School, to ensure we receive your results. We recommend booking this as early as possible as test seats may be limited.
Previous tests cannot be carried forward.
CPR, First aid, Basic life support
Pre-practicum requirements: Ensure you have the required certifications for your program prior to your first practicum placement. Note that completing these items too early may result in a requirement to re-certify.
Bachelor of Science in Nursing
Students will be required to obtain Basic Life Support (BLS) and Oxygen Therapy prior to the end of Fall Term Year 1 and maintain it throughout the program. The cost for such certification will be additional to other course fees in the Nursing Program. Recertification is required every year. Pharmacy Technician
Students will be required to obtain Emergency First Aid with CPR Level C prior to the lab and practicum term (June 1) and maintain it throughout the program. The cost for such certification will be additional to other course fees in the Pharmacy Technician Program. Courses can be found at First Aid & Safety Certification | Selkirk College
Practical Nursing
Students will be required to obtain Basic Life Support (BLS) prior to the first practicum and maintain it throughout the program. The cost for such certification will be additional to other course fees in the Practical Nursing Program. Courses can be found at First Aid & Safety Certification | Selkirk College
Health Care Assistant Certificate and Diploma
Students will be required to obtain either Emergency or Standard First Aid with CPR Level C prior to the first practicum and maintain it throughout the program. Alternately acceptable is any first aid course with CPR C or Basic Life Support Certification. The cost for such certification will be additional to other course fees in the Health Care Aide Program. Criminal record check
Admission requirement: Early Childhood Care and Education Certificate, Early Learning and Childcare Diploma
Pre-Practicum requirement for: Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Education Assistant & Community Support Worker, Health Care Assistant – Certificate & Diploma, Human Services Diploma, Mental Health & Substance Use, Nursing Unit Clerk, Pharmacy Technician, Practical Nursing, Social Services Worker
You need to obtain the criminal record check from the Ministry of Justice. Please do not go to your local police station as we no longer accept criminal record checks from the RCMP.
Every post-secondary institution in British Columbia is required to have students in a Health and Human Services program complete this check. The criminal record check is valid for five years.
You will need to verify your identity by using the BC Services Card Login. If you are unable to use the BC Services Card Login, Selkirk College will verify your ID after you submit your criminal record check.

Pharmacy Technician Students from Out of Province
You will need to obtain your criminal record check from your province or territory of residence.
International Students
A clear police check from your country of residence is required. Once you are admitted to your program and present in Canada, you will also be required to obtain a Ministry of Justice Criminal Record Check as described above to attend your practice placements.
Foodsafe Level 1 certification
Pre-practicum requirement: Health Care Assistant Certificate and Diploma
Foodsafe Level 1 is a comprehensive training program for students, workers, supervisors and operators in food services.
This course will teach you basic safe food handling practices and help you earn a five-year certificate.
Immunizations
Pre-practicum requirement: Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Health Care Assistant Certificate and Diploma, Nursing Unit Clerk, Pharmacy Technician, Practical Nursing
Print out the Immunization Record Form and bring it with you when obtaining your immunizations to be completed by the health official and/or obtain a print-out from that same health official.
Most immunizations are done free of charge by health units in BC or community pharmacies, but any costs associated with meeting these requirements are the responsibility of the student.
Students who have not met the immunization requirements will not be permitted to attend practice experiences.
Public health units do not keep records from many years ago. Bring any records of past immunizations you have with you to the health unit to assist the public health nurse, travel nurse or pharmacist to complete the immunization record.
The immunization record is not to be filled out by the applicant.

Interview and orientation
Pre-program requirement: Early Childhood Care and Education Certificate, Education Assistant and Community Support Worker, Social Services Worker
Prior to beginning the program, admitted students will be required to attend an interview and one-on-one orientation with a faculty member.
Once you have been conditionally admitted, a faculty member will reach out to schedule your interview.

Please use the reference form to provide two personal references from someone who is not related to you, who has known you for at least two years and who is qualified to comment on your attitude, abilities and personal qualities. This could include a supervisor, teacher, coach or community leader, for example.
The references must be submitted to us by the person providing the reference, either by email or by sealing the reference in an envelope and signing their name over the seal, to be opened by the Office of the Registrar.

Volunteer/work experience
Admission requirement: Education Assistant and Community Support Worker, Human Services Diploma (Child and Youth Care and Social Service Worker specialties only), Social Services Worker
A minimum of 30 hours of volunteer or work experience is required for this program. Your direct supervisor will need to complete the Volunteer/Work Experience Form. The form can be submitted by email.
While we recommend volunteering or working in a human services-related role in preparation for the program, this is not a requirement—the experience can be in any field.
