Students looking to build meaningful careers in tourism have a new pathway at Selkirk College with the launch of the new Tourism and Destination Management diploma.
Starting in fall 2026 at the Tenth Street Campus in Nelson, the two-year program is designed to prepare students for leadership roles in one of the world’s fastest-growing industries. Building on more than 40 years of tourism and hospitality education, the modernized program reflects the evolving needs of the visitor economy and growing demand for professionals who understand how tourism can support communities, culture and the environment.
Through five themed semesters, students will explore topics such as destination development, tourism marketing, customer experience, outdoor recreation, financial management and event coordination. The program also includes several field trips, a paid work term, real-world projects and student-run events, allowing students to gain hands-on industry experience while studying.
“Learning tourism where tourism actually happens gives students an incredible advantage,” says Martin Keyserlingk, school chair, Hospitality and Tourism. “In British Columbia and in the Kootenays, your classroom extends far beyond campus. Students are learning directly from the mountains, lakes, businesses and communities that shape authentic visitor experiences.”
People, Place and Community
The program also prepares graduates to lead the future of responsible, sustainable tourism. Tourism is one of the largest employers in BC and continues to evolve as communities and destinations work to balance economic opportunity with environmental stewardship and cultural respect. Throughout the program, students explore strategies that support people, place and planet, with sustainability, Indigenous perspectives and community engagement embedded across the curriculum.
“Tourism has the power to connect people and strengthen communities,” says Mallory Attorp, program coordinator. “Our goal is to help students understand how to build tourism experiences that are sustainable, respectful and meaningful for the places where they happen.”
Graduates of Tourism and Destination Management will be prepared to enter the workforce or use their transferable credits, giving students the flexibility to continue their education at partnering universities across BC and Canada.
For students ready to shape the future of tourism, the program offers a unique opportunity to learn locally while preparing for a global industry.
