Explore the exceptional artistry and skill of students in Selkirk College’s Fine Woodworking Program at the upcoming Fine Woodworking Year End Show and Sale. The event runs from Friday, May 22, to Sunday, May 24, at the Nelson Trading Company (402 Baker Street).
The weekend kicks off on Friday evening with a gala from 7–9 pm, featuring live music, hors d’oeuvres and beverages. Guests will have the chance to meet the makers and experience an impressive range of handcrafted work up close.
This year’s collection showcases an array of unique creations: finely built cabinetry, tables of every style, elegant boxes and beautifully carved spoons. Each piece reflects the remarkable transformation of raw, natural materials into thoughtful, three-dimensional works of art.
“I get inspiration from nature and the other artists around me. I’m continually motivated by colour and shape. Trees and their available wood really impact my ideas,” says student Jackson Hawthornthwaite.
Over the nine-month program, students gain hands-on experience with woodworking hand and power tools under the guidance of instructors Dave Ringheim and Scott Stevens. Both award-winning woodworkers, they deliver a learning experience centred on vision, form and function.
“It’s my dream to be able to build my own furniture,” says student Kaelib George. “Thanks to Dave and Scott, I’ve built both the confidence and skills to pursue that dream.”
This year’s show also features an inaugural exhibition by Aleasha Carr and Wade Courson, program graduates who returned as artists-in-residence.
Catch the show at the Nelson Trading Company (402 Baker Street) on Friday, May 22, from 9 am to 9 pm, Saturday, May 23, from 9 am to 5 pm and Sunday, May 24, from 9 am to 4 pm.
