Aubrey Michalofsky Social Justice Scholarship

The Aubrey Michalofsky Social Justice Scholarship will be awarded annually to a student in the Law & Justice Studies or Peace & Conflict Studies.

Aubrey Michalofsky grew up in Nelson and was intelligent and curious about the world around him. Deeply compassionate, Aubrey saw the potential in any human being. He was loyal and loving, protective of his friends and family, and intolerant of all forms of racism, inequality and ignorance.

Aubrey followed his vision of social justice to the Law & Justice Studies Program. He valued the camaraderie, community and encouragement that he found with his instructors and fellow students. With a diligent and engaged mind, he excelled at his studies despite the hardships he experienced. Aubrey suffered from addiction and ultimately died from a toxic drug supply.

Given Aubrey’s passion to address the inequities of society, this scholarship shares his legacy with students who have experienced hardship or are compassionate toward those who experience hardship.

The Nicole Parker Memorial Scholarship will be awarded annually to a Selkirk College student enrolled in the Law & Justice Program, with first preference given to a student planning to pursue a career in criminal justice or social work.

The Nicole Parker Memorial Fund was established by her colleagues at Castlegar Community Corrections to honour her life and career. Nicole worked as a probation officer in the West Kootenay area for nine years from 2011 until 2020.

During her career, she was dedicated to addressing intimate partner violence through her work as a probation officer and as a community member. She volunteered on the Violence Against Women in Relationships (VAWIR) committee and the local Interagency Case Assessment Team (ICAT) responsible for assessing the highest risk cases of intimate partner violence. Nicole was a part of the Neighbours, Friends and Families campaign to bring awareness to intimate partner violence in her community. Prior to her work in community corrections, Nicole was employed at the Aimee Beaulieu Transition House and at Nelson Community Services as a support worker.

Throughout her career, Nicole demonstrated her passions through her work. Nicole had a desire to learn and inspired others to do the same. She loved to teach, and it was through teaching that she encouraged personal growth and development in others.

Nicole was highly respected by her colleague’s province wide and her community justice partners. She cared deeply for others and this was evident in her relationships and through her work. Nicole will always be remembered for her professionalism, strong work ethic and integrity.
