Story

LORRAINE ASKEW MEMORIAL BURSARY

Born: January 12, 1953 (Lorraine Brown)
Powell River, BC

Died: August 13, 1992
Nanaimo, BC

Lorraine was the second oldest of four sisters born to Joe and Shirley Brown of Powell River in 1953.

From an early age she knew she wanted to be a nurse, and while in school participated in the Candy Striper program. Lorraine graduated from the Royal Jubilee School of Nursing in Victoria in 1974 and worked in the pediatric ward in Victoria at Royal Jubilee until 1976. She then worked in the pediatric ward in Nelson until 1977 when she moved with her family to Cold Lake Alberta. Lorraine worked at the John Neil Hospital in Cold Lake in all departments, then helped set up the emergency/ambulance department. She also was responsible for the Candy Striper program. In 1983 she moved to Edson Alberta with her family and worked as a supervisor, rewriting policies and procedures for the hospital, and setting up education courses for the staff.

Lorraine was killed tragically on August 13, 199f2 along with her ten-year-old daughter Tara-Leigh and thirteen-year-old daughter Dawn, during a loading procedure of BC Ferry in Nanaimo.

Lorraine was a loving mother and wife and she truly cared for the communities she lived and worked in. She believed in Education. She is dearly missed by all who knew her.
