Story

Margaret was born August 2, 1951 in Revelstoke, B.C. where she received her schooling to Grade Six. After this, she moved with her family to various locations in BC, finally arriving in Robson in 1968. She graduated from Stanley Humphries Secondary School in 1969.

From an early age, Margaret was interested in drawing, painting, hiking, and camping in the surrounding environment. After a year at an art school in Malvern, England, Margaret returned to Canada to attend Selkirk College for two years before enrolling in UBC, where she obtained a B.Sc. Degree in 1974.

In May 1973, Margaret married a fellow student, Barry Letts. They lived on campus for a time, and then at White Rock. Upon graduating, Margaret took up seasonal employment at Jasper National Park as a Park Naturalist. Here she enjoyed the outdoors to the full, hiking and camping in the mountains.

At the end of the first season at Jasper, Margaret traveled to Europe where, in the spring of 1976, she was struck and killed by an express train as she crossed the tracks to board another, local train.

In Margaret’s memory, this prize is awarded to a biology student with an interest in Art.
