The Drone Technologies program is designed to provide learners with the competencies required to use drones for commercial and/or personal use.
Selkirk Innovates, an applied research division of Selkirk College is pleased to offer the Drone Technologies training program. Selkirk Innovates’ highly specialized equipment and faculty expertise will deliver a state-of-the art applied drone training program for individuals looking to upgrade their skills and resumes.
The program will cover drone history & data products, drone applications and equipment considerations, safety guidelines & risk mitigation, field operations & mission planning, post-field data processing, and will provide learners with hands on experience flying drones. Upon successful program completion, learners will be prepared to attempt the Transport Canada Small Basic or Small Advanced RPAS Exam and Advanced Flight Review.
Program Format
Students will receive 135 hours of training over 19 weeks – including 75 hours of instructor-led in person and online learning and 60 hours of field time.
• Approximately 3-5 hours / week of instructor-led learning time – a blend of in-person and self-directed online learning
• A weekend field day every 2 weeks for a total of 60 hours to build your drone flying expertise
This program will be made up of three courses which must be taken in the following sequence:
1. Drone Awareness (March 21 - May 4)
2. Basic Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) (September 12 - October 26)
