Learners in Nakusp and Kaslo will still access Selkirk College academic upgrading despite a recent announcement about closing local learning centres due to financial challenges. The Kaslo centre was permanently closed in June 2025, and Nakusp will close its doors on December 31.
Starting this September, upgrading instructor Jenn Lucke will spend one day a week in each community, working with learners to develop skills, complete prerequisites for entry into college or university, or pursue a BC Adult Graduation Diploma through Academic Upgrading.
In Kaslo, community members can learn with Lucke at the Kaslo Library on Mondays, while in Nakusp, they can continue to meet at the Nakusp Learning Centre on Tuesdays until December 31. The college will announce a new location in the community for 2026.

Learners in these communities can drop in or make an appointment to select and register for college courses, connect with instructors and courses in other centres, get one-to-one help or computer support, and enjoy a quiet space to study, submit assignments and write tests.

Community Education and Workplace Training Programming Continues as Needed
First aid and other continuing education courses will still be offered this fall in Nakusp. Upcoming workplace training opportunities include the six-week Forest Workers Essentials program, which is eligible for funding through the StrongerBC future skills grant.
In the future, individuals and organizations in Kaslo and Nakusp with specific workplace training or community education needs can contact Marilyn Rivers to discuss opportunities for in-community learning.
