Suicide Prevention
Notice:
Any noticeable change in behavior could be a warning sign that your friend isn’t doing well.
Look for:
a. Drinking more than usual
b. Not texting or calling as much
c. Appearing tired or distant
d. Talking about how much life sucks
Reach Out: Start a conversation
a. Over the phone
b. Over a casual hangout
c. While driving
d. Working on a project
Ask: As questions, listen and let them know you’re there
a. Avoid problem solving
b. Be present and don’t change the subject
c. ‘The other day you said your life sucks… what’s that like for you’
d. Acknowledge their feelings ‘That sounds really hard’
e. If you’re still worried, ask: ‘Are you thinking about suicide?
Support and Connect: Remember you are not a counsellor
a. Encourage them to reach out to additional support
b. Call Crisis Services Canada together
c. Check in with them following the conversation
d. If they have imminent plans to die, call 911 and ensure they’re not left alone
e. Counselling services are available to all Selkirk students, it’s free and confidential
