I would tell my friends to come for the education and to stay for the friendships and connections.
Before starting Selkirk, Dagmar was a single mom of two boys.
"The first year of my studies I was awarded $5,000 of financial aid and about $2,400 in the second year. I had recently moved to Castlegar with my two boys to attend Selkirk, and the bursaries I recieved helped me to be able to work less, concentrate more on my studies and be present for my sons. The bursaries helped solidify my success as an A+ student, because I had more time and mental energy."
Dagmar chose to enrol at Selkirk College because she was looking to get into the social service field and wanted an in-class experience.
"The second reason I chose Selkirk College was so that I could transfer my credits to a university program and have my diploma count as my first two years of a degree."
Graduating with a diploma while persuing a degree gave Dagmar the opportunity to find a job right out of college.
"I loved having a diploma under my belt while in the process of furthering my studies—it lent me much more weight when finding work in my chosen field," stated Dagmar. "I currently work at Trail FAIR as a Family Advancement Worker while completing my Bachelor's Degree in Social Work through UVic's distance learning."
Besides the accomplishment of graduating with a diploma, Dagmar also collected a variety of transferrable skills.
"Earning my diploma gave me the skills I employ daily at my workplace, such as through counselling. I take a strengths-based, client-centred and trauma-informed approach with the people I serve. These skills were the result of the training and education I recieved through my program at Selkirk."
