A student at Selkirk College’s downtown Trail campus is seeing a dream come to life this Thursday as his intricate designs take centre stage in an art exhibit.

UNO, a collection of works by Raul Pous Facha, opens with a reception on March 13 from 4 pm to 5:30 pm at the VISAC Gallery. Originally from Mexico, Pous Facha has called Canada home since 2022. His passion for materials and manufacturing techniques has shaped his design philosophy.

“While I’ve always appreciated the artistry and individuality of handmade products, I’ve also recognized the challenges they face in achieving precision and consistent quality,” he shares.

That curiosity led him to digital fabrication and design (DFAB), a field that allows him to bring complex designs to life with precision while preserving the essence of handmade craftsmanship.

UNO highlights this fusion of technology and artistry, bridging the gap between traditional techniques and modern innovation.

“Each piece becomes an expression of my vision, combining art and architecture in a seamless, innovative way,” he reflects.

Selkirk College’s DFAB program is built on collaboration, problem-solving, and hands-on learning. Students tackle design challenges, take part in field trips, and work on industry projects, culminating in a capstone project.

“Raul has a fascinating background, and exhibiting his DFAB-created pieces at a gallery has been a longtime dream of his,” says DFAB instructor Kailey Allan.

“His work represents dedication, hard work, and, of course, rigorous sanding. His pieces explore the intersection of nature, reclaimed local mass timber, and digital fabrication techniques.”

The VISAC, housed on the bottom floor of the Trail Selkirk College campus, has been steadfast in championing new artists and giving them a platform to shine.

“Which highlights their commitment to helping emerging artists,” Allan adds, noting that UNO is part of Pous Facha’s final capstone project, set to be presented next month.

For those in the Trail area between March 13 and March 20, UNO is a must-see, alongside works from other local artists.

The gallery is open Monday to Friday from noon to 4 p.m. during the exhibition.
