Like a bustling train station carrying travelers to destinations for work and play, Selkirk College affords those wanting to foster global citizenship the opportunity for profound learning that last a lifetime.
International Education Week takes place during the third week of November at post-secondary campuses across Canada. A highlight of Selkirk College’s annual calendar, this year’s focus on international education takes place between November 18 and 22.
“This week affords us the opportunity to explore the college’s connection to the world,” says Taya Whitehead, vice-president of education & students. “The college gets to shine a spotlight on the essential work being done in this area of post-secondary that not only enhances diversity in our region, but provides domestic students the chance to build on their global citizenship through study abroad options and connecting with international learners on our campuses.”
There will be increased emphasis on international education throughout the month of November with two showcase events taking place that invite both the college and broader community to check out the vibrant mix of cultures. The annual Intercultural Fair will take place on Nelson’s Tenth Street Campus on November 15 and on the Castlegar Campus on November 22. Both events will bring together students for a sharing of information, food, dance, song and games that highlight their home countries.
International education has been an important foundation of learning at Selkirk College for decades. The college currently has 800 international students enrolled from all corners of the globe who arrive for programs that enhance their education and immerse learners into Canadian culture. The two Intercultural Fairs in Nelson and Castlegar will share cultures from countries that include Philippines, Nigeria, India, Taiwan, Mexico, China, Korea, Peru and Japan.
Despite recent adjustments to Canada’s immigration structure by the federal government that will significantly reduce the number of international study permits granted at post-secondaries across the country, Selkirk College will continue to welcome students from around the world.
“Selkirk College is well known for its openness and supports offered to international students, something that will continue despite changes to government policy,” says Whitehead. “We offer a unique rural British Columbia experience with programs that are designed to help international learners succeed. The numbers might be reduced in the next few years, but the impact students from other countries have on the culture of our college will continue to be strong.”
