Help prepare tomorrow’s frontline health care experts for the challenges ahead.
Students gaining the education, skills and training in the four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Program are vital to the region’s health care system. Around 32 nurses graduate into the system each year, and most stay in the West Kootenay and Boundary regions.
Help produce successful learning outcomes—the program is looking for community members to spend a couple of hours in the simulation lab with students. There is a specific need for children from infant to preschool age (up to four or five) and their caregivers willing to have a very basic physical assessment done during an interaction with first-year nursing students.
In a calm and supportive environment supervised by instructors, volunteer parents and their children would act like typical patients. The students will perform a basic physical assessment on the pediatric client with a respiratory focus. Volunteers would be required to spend an hour in the simulation lab on the Castlegar Campus.
"These simulations provide an invaluable bridge between theoretical knowledge and real-world practice," says BSN Program instructor Chris Hillary. " They create a safe environment where students can learn through trial and error, even when things don't go so well—allowing them to refine their skills, build confidence, and better prepare for the challenges they’ll face in high-stakes, real-world scenarios."
Simulation labs will take place on:
- January 28: 9:50-11 am
- January 28: 2:20-4:30 pm
- January 29: 10:50 am-12 pm
A small honorarium is available for volunteers.
