It’s Emergency Preparedness Week. This national event is a great time to familiarize yourself with what to do in different types of emergencies and make sure you are ready to react quickly to protect yourself, your family and your community.
This year’s theme is using technology in emergency management. For the Selkirk College community—with campuses and learning centres in different regions—the risks can vary, and it’s important to be aware of the particular actions you can take to stay safe.
"Anticipating potential emergencies empowers us to respond calmly and effectively in times of crisis" says Health & Safety Advisor Laura Neigel. "As we observe Emergency Preparedness Week, it’s not only important to compile a list and emergency contacts and vital documents in case of an evacuation but also a designated storage location. In preparation for extreme weather events, it's a good habit to assemble a go-bag in your vehicle for the changing seasons or if you need to evacuate while at work and unable to go home. Take some time this week to talk with your family after researching both your community and workplace emergency plans and procedures. Creating your own emergency plan provides peace of mind and leads to better outcomes."
