The wildfire situation in British Columbia is posing a serious threat to many communities across the province. Our hearts go out to those who have suffered loss and challenges from this destructive natural disaster. Our deepest appreciation to the crews battling the flames and all the frontline emergency personnel working to support impacted communities.
On August 18, the Province of BC declared a Provincial State of Emergency to support the ongoing response and recovery efforts caused by wildfire. The declaration includes travel restrictions and other stipulations that enable the best response across the province. You can learn more about the provincial response at its website.
Conditions in the Selkirk College region remain volatile with all communities within the Southeast Fire Centre at either high or extreme ratings. The most important action all students and staff can take at this moment is to be prepared. Wildfire spreads quickly and when communities are directly impacted, immediate response by residents is required. Please ensure that you are signed up to the college’s Alertus app which provides emergency notifications in a timely manner.
Should evacuation be necessary in any part of the college region, it is the municipal, regional and provincial governments that take the lead. Please ensure that you acquire the necessary information prior in order to be prepared. Should an emergency situation occur, follow all instructions.
