A foundational program that has thrived at Selkirk College since the doors first swung open on regional post-secondary in 1966, faculty in the School of University Arts & Sciences recognized outstanding student achievement at the annual UAS Excellence Awards.
The Pit on the Castlegar Campus was overflowing cerebrally in early-April for the annual School of University Arts & Sciences (UAS) Excellence Awards ceremony.
From Creative Writing to Physics and everything in-between, 78 stellar students received awards as the winter semester entered its final crucial weeks. Hitting pause on adding the finishing touches to semester-end assignments and studying for final exams, students and faculty took a moment to reflect on academic accomplishments over the last few months.
“The excellence awards are a favourite among faculty because they are an opportunity to celebrate our students’ success,” says Sarah Fawcett, English Instructor and one of the organizers of the event. “We ask a lot from our students, and these last few semesters have been especially trying. I’m sure I can speak for my colleagues when I say that it’s our students’ curiosity, enthusiasm and tenacity that make our work rewarding. This event is a chance to thank them for that.”
With Anthropology Instructor Roisin Seifert handling emcee duties, the crowd heard words of gratitude and encouragement from UAS Chair Duff Sutherland, Dean Allison Alder and President Angus Graeme. A double Excellence Award winner, Thomas Nowaczynski was chosen as the class representative and spoke about overcoming the challenges of the last few months. UAS student Misauti Voros—also an Excellence Award winner—played piano for the event.
With more than 25 disciplines of study, the School of University Arts & Sciences provides learners the opportunity to earn two-year diplomas that are transferrable to four-year degree granting universities across Canada. With outstanding faculty and small class sizes, students can choose from more than 100 individual classes that enhance future studies in an array of subject areas. Courses can be taken as part of a diploma or individually.
Convocation 2022 for all college programs will take place on April 26 at the Castlegar Campus. It will be the first in-person graduation ceremony at Selkirk College since 2019, with the previous two events being canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
