Writing a short play, something I thought I would never do, helped me grow creatively in the areas I was already comfortable in.
Not only that, but discussing and reading my classmate’s work showed me how other people approached the same topic in different ways. This group setting really sold the class for me. Being able to compare your writing with your classmates is an experience you cannot find in any other setting. You are given the power to express your own original ideas and see the value of your writing through many perspectives.
This is an invaluable experience for international students especially, who have only experienced writing in a formal, essay style, way. Being given permission to unleash your imagination on the page without the fear of structural limitations allows you to explore English with your imagination rather than a textbook. The friends you will make and the stories you will create together can only be found in the Creative Writing Program.
